Accutane guidelines for femalesIt is highly recommended to not take Accutane if you are pregnant or if you could become pregnant during treatment or for one month after you stop taking the drug. Your doctor won’t prescribe you with Accutane treatment in that case. This is because Accutane makes part of the X pregnancy category in the FDA charts. This means Accutane is proved to cause severe birth defects and abnormalities in the development of an unborn baby. The drug may also cause miscarriage, premature birth, or death of the baby. Due to ongoing concerns about the effects of Accutane upon pregnant women and children, in August 2005 the FDA has added a requirement that women using Accutane and doctors who prescribe the drug should participate in a nation-wide database. The hope is that this measure will reduce the number of women who become pregnant while taking Accutane and protect the patients for whom this drug may be potentially lethal. You should also be very cautious to not take Accutane while breastfeeding. There aren’t sufficient data on the ability of Accutane to pass into milk, so don’t risk your child’s health and keep from taking Accutane if you have a nursing baby. |
